When I chose the cover photo for my blog page, I did not realize how appropriate or poignant it would become. If you, like I, have become frustrated and discouraged by and with the impeachment proceedings in the House, do not give up hope.
Last night, while scrolling through the programs I had saved on my DVR, I came across a CNN special report “When a President Faces Impeachment,” and my hope is restored. If you have a DVR and the ability to search for programming, I strongly suggest that you find it and watch. It originally aired on October 25, 2019.
The program, narrated by Fareed Zekaria, is part of CNN’s Special Report series. It takes a retrospective look at the impeachment proceedings of Presidents Johnson, Nixon and Clinton and includes a look at sentiment toward the proceedings by both the public and by members of Congress, in the cases of Nixon and Clinton,
It was heartening for me to hear, in the face of overwhelming evidence of wrongdoing in the Nixon case, Republican senators scoffing at the proceedings, calling them wholly partisan and without merit. We all know how that turned out.
It was much the same then, as it is now. Nixon had the self respect, dignity, organizational respect and respect for the constitution to resign from office. We know we cannot expect the same from Trump, who will go down kicking, screaming and calling for his supporters to rise up and protect him. He is a tyrant and would-be dictator for life.
He must be stopped. The time is now. The fight is on.
In case you were wondering . . .
