What’s All the Fuss? It Was Just a Joke!! Seriously?

Today I’m not really sure where to start. I am appalled. I am disgusted. I am ashamed to be a citizen of the United States, and over-archingly, I am ashamed of the politicians who have been elected to lead our country.

If you are a reader of this blog, you may have noticed that I very rarely ever refer to this country as “America.” Rather, I refer to it as “our country”, “this country”, or the “United States”, or the “US.” To refer to the United States of America as simply “America”, does a tremendous disservice to the rest of the Americans; those living in Mexico, Canada, countries in Central America like Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and others; our neighbors in South America like Bolivia, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina, and all the others.

The rest of the Americans do not need to be dragged down by the buffoonery we are currently experiencing in the US. The rest of the world thought we in the US were idiots when we elected George W. Bush not once, but twice. Over the eight years of his presidency, George W. Bush managed to make the United States the laughing stock of the world. The current president managed to do that in 132 days.

Sort of privately, I refer to our president as “the Raven King.” Ravens, or as we called them back in Oklahoma, crows are known for loving bright shiny objects, picking them up and taking them back to their nests to deflect would be intruders. The current president is very much like that. He perceives that he comes under attack by people who are presenting the truth and he throws a bright shiny object our way to capture our attention and deflect us from whatever it is that he doesn’t want people to talk about.

And then, when he lashes out with outrageous lies, and yes that is what they are, LIES, his troops come to his defense explaining that “he’s only defending himself because he’s being unfairly treated by the media.” BULLSHIT. I don’t normally use expletives in this blog but it is time to call it out for what it is.

Just yesterday, the president tweeted a 28 second video which portrayed him as smacking down and beating up a CNN reporter. As you might expect, CNN exploded over the video, which was widely aired on their network. Exercising journalistic professionalism, CNN called in the president’s supporters to plumb their views on the video. Here is what they had to say:

“It was a joke.” Are you freaking kidding me? It was a joke. Nothing more. Just defending himself against unfair media attacks. What a complete and utter Neanderthal. The man has no respect for the office, for the country, or for the people who live in this country. And yet he is cheered on by his Neanderthal buddies who form his base.

In an article in The Hill,

Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.) on Monday compared President Trump’s attacks on the media to a dictatorship, asking whether Trump has any understanding of the importance of a free press.

“Pretty much every president before this one has understood that the media is absolutely essential to our liberty,” Himes said on CNN’s “New Day.”

“Dictators attack the media.”

Although it was unquestionably an unwise choice of words at the time, Hillary had it right when she referred to his base as, “a basket of deplorables.”

Making America great again does not include deconstructing the programs and the institutions we have built over the last 250 years. It does not include appointing an EPA director who has spent a lifetime suing the EPA in order to deregulate clean air and clean water provisions, or to allow fossil fuel companies to plunder the earth that we call home. It does not include appointing Tom Price as the director of Health and Human Services, a physician, to take healthcare away from 33 million US citizens. It does not include trampling the civil rights of millions of Americans, undoing provisions to protect our LGBTQI citizens, imposing a religious ban on visiting our country–especially when not since 9/11 have any of the terrorist acts in this country been committed by anyone other than legal US residents or citizens of this country.

He and his party are playing a shell game, pitting the have-nots against that have lesses. He is making friends of dictators and strongmen around the world while at the same time alienating our traditional allies–the folks who would come to our defense in the event of a true national disaster.

And we are not even in to six months of this idiot’s term.

Now the question arises, whether the opposition party, the Democrats, are capable of creating a unifying message or of anointing a messenger who is capable of delivering that message to the people of this country. Historically, Democrats are not good salesman, but they need to be. They have to be. Democrats have to stop playing the traditional political game if they want to knock this asshole out of the White House and regain sane control over our government.

So, will we remain enslaved to the Raven King and his hoard of shiny objects or will someone come forward to lead us out of the darkness? I wish I knew.

In case you were wondering . . .
